What Passes for Food in America

Just read and excellent post on CHEESESLAVE (I love the domain name – jealous) titled “What Passes for Food in America”; it could also be called “There is no such thing as cheap food.” (Michael Pollan quote – read through to the end). The writer recently stayed at a hotel which offered a free breakfast buffet – something that up until recently I would think was a great value. But after reading this blog post I understand even better how terrible the food industry has become.

I also loved this comment from Tara – she totally describes how I feel:

The more I learn about actual ‘real food’, the harder it is for me to eat outside of my home. I find it both freeing and imprisoning. I find less and less to buy at the supermarket and find it harder and harder to not be disgusted when we go out to eat.

Now, I am not sure I am going to cook when I go on vacation as the blog author did, but I will choose more carefully when eating out.

I have stayed at that same hotel more than once…and the morning buffet leaves me cold. I end up drinking coffee and searching for something real. The bananas seem like a possibility, but are usually too green to be tempting. I end up with a few bites of toast and hope lunch comes quickly! I’m glad someone else feels the same way. Thanks!
