Lessons learned from a broken wrist

sherzy_castFor anyone who didn’t know – I broke my wrist in mid July. I was just being dumb, doing something I shouldn’t have been doing – sprinting with the dog, and fell and broke my right wrist. I spent a week wearing a brace then 4 weeks in a hot pink cast (had to wait for the swelling to go down before getting the cast. You would think a person could get a cast in a nice, neutral color like black, but since the median age for breaking your arm is 10 all the colors available were fluorescent). It was not fun at all – wearing a cast feels almost claustrophobic. But on the positive side, I am going to share some lessons learned from breaking my wrist:

I can do more with my left (non-dominant) hand than I ever thought I could

It’s good to let others help you

Wearing a cast is only half of the battle. It takes longer to stretch out and strengthen the wrist than all the time spent wearing the cast.

Anyone and everyone will talk to you when you are wearing a cast, they’ll ask you how it happened and then they will share a story of themselves or their brother or their uncle who broke their wrist arm or leg, etc…

Telling the same story of how it happened gets boring – if you are creative make up interesting stories to tell strangers.

Keyboard shortcuts are good.

Blow-outs at Great Clips are hit and miss. Had 2 – one great, one terrible.

Don’t trust the urgent care doctor – see a specialist. The “orthopedic doctor” I saw failed to set my wrist bones, so the wrist healed wrong and will never be quite right.
