Talking with friends the other day the concept of naming cars came up. When I was younger I named my cars, and they were always boys, but not so much anymore. Looking through old photos I found pictures of (most) my old cars; therefore, I brief history of Sherzy cars:
When I was 15 I bought a 1984 Ford Tempo for $1500 (I had been saving for over a year) and named him Rigel after the brightest star in constellation Orion.
About a year later got my second car, Quincy (Rigel’s middle name was Quincy. Yeah, I took the naming that far), a 1988 Honda Accord. Drove this car for many years. It had about 70,00 miles when I got it, I drove it to 180,000 miles. It had lights that popped up, I loved that.
When I was 18 and still driving Quincy I decided I needed to own 2 cars at once (like my brothers). So I got Bernard, a 1983 Honda Accord, for about a grand (the above photo is not Bernard, but a similar car). Bernard was a manual transmission; both Rigel and Quincy were automatic, so it made sense to practice my newly acquired skill of driving a manual. Several of the months I owned (about 8 total) Bernard he was lent out to friends visiting from England. When I moved to Mankato I sold him to my brother Jon for $500.
When I moved from Mankato to Lakeville I got a new car to drive around the big city. His name was Cosmo, he was a 1997 Saturn SL2. Bought him used, not sure how many miles. Manual transmission, I was hooked on it now. After Quincy I never really used the car’s name anymore, it was just for nostalgic sake that I named the 97 Saturn.
After September 11th the economy was in rough shape, car manufactures were offering great deals. So I traded the 97 Saturn in for a brand new 2002 SL2. Loaded, manual transmission, 11 miles when I got it. His name defaulted to Kramer, because the first Saturn was Cosmo. But I don’t think I ever referred to the car as Kramer.
Now days I drive either our Honda Civic or our new Saturn Outlook (Kramer got traded in for the Outlook). Both are nameless, but that is OK.
